Hanco Kolk

Hanco Kolk, a renowned Dutch comic artist, has garnered widespread praise from both mainstream audiences and serious art circles. He is primarily known for his deftly crafted humorous collaborations with Peter de Wit, where Kolk lends his talents as an illustrator and co-writer. Their notable works include the adventurous ‘Gilles de Geus’ (1983-2003), the innovative ‘Mannetje en Mannetje’ (1988-1995) and the witty ‘S1ngle’ (2000- ), which follows the journey of three girlfriends in their search for a partner. These two comics were also adapted into successful television series in the Netherlands. Kolk and de Wit jointly founded the publishing imprint De Plaatjesmaker, cementing their position in the comic world. Throughout his illustrious career, Kolk has traversed various genres, seamlessly adapting from children’s comics (‘Cor Daad’, 1984-1998) to mature themes and from satire to autobiographical works. Among his most lauded graphic novels is the satirical masterpiece ‘Meccano’ (1989-2004), which offers a scathing commentary on the opulent lifestyle of a tax-free mini-state, undoubtedly inspired by Monaco. Kolk’s style of illustration is equally praiseworthy, characterized by a linear approach that has gained sophistication and economy over the years.
