Nathan Coley, a contemporary artist originally from Glasgow, Scotland, currently resides and works in the same city. In 2007, he was listed as a shortlisted nominee for the coveted Turner Prize and has since held both solo and group exhibitions on an international scale. His work has been acquired by private and public collections worldwide. During his stint with Christine Borland, Ross Sinclair, Douglas Gordon, and other renowned artists, he completed Fine Art studies at the Glasgow School of Art between 1985 and 1989.
Coley’s artistic exploration delves into the concept of “public” space, intricately examining how architecture is imbued – and constantly reimagined – with significance. Across various mediums, he digs deep into what the built environment reveals about the individuals it encircles, and how social and personalized responses are heavily influenced by culture. By utilizing the readymade as a tool to extract and re-establish in the world, Coley addresses the ritualistic forms utilized to express our beliefs – from handheld placards and erected signs to religious sanctuaries.
