Fred Pollack

The paintings of Fred Pollack are typically the result of an intuitive process of formulating and disrupting. Throughout this process, he incorporates both geometric and anthropomorphic shapes, as well as abstract and figurative elements, within compositions where color takes a backseat to black, grey, and white. Shapes and planes, often cropped at the edges, give the impression that Pollack’s paintings are part of a larger cosmic order.

In the uncomfortable combinations of unequal quantities, which at times appear abstract and then suggest representation, Pollack’s paintings find their visual significance. While it fits in form with post-war abstract and neo-figurative art, his work seems to harken back to the tradition of surrealism through its alienating interplay of darkness and dream.

To avoid influencing the viewer, Pollack rarely titles his paintings. “The observer should feel the same freedom exploring my compositions that I felt while painting,” he explains.
